The Styxx facemask is comprised of a salvaged ceramic mask, transformed through layers of stonewash putty to construct a dense, stone-like surface. An original structural hole, once intended to thread a head ribbon, becomes the anchor for a gilded metal leaf, engineered with a giver and a receiver end, salvaged from a discarded chandelier and screwed into the ceramic body. Crowning the structure is an array of lithophaga rocks, natural limestone formations hollowed out into craters by burrowing organisms seeking nutrients. These rocks are leftovers from a previous garment, assembled with looping fishing line through the holes; their organic perforations and twists extend the mask’s rough, tactile surface. A ribbon fastened to the interior restores it to be worn over the face again. This piece is 1/1 and handmade in our studio in Athens.
