SOJOURNER TRUTH of the Dinner Party

18.00

Sojourner Truth was an American abolitionist and a civil and women’s rights activist, born into slavery in 1797. After being bought and sold four times, endured hard physical labor and harsh punishments, she escaped with her daughter in 1826 and two years later she went to court to claim her son who was left behind. She ended up being the first woman to win such a case against a white man. During the Civil War, she tried to secure grants from the U.S. government for formerly enslaved people. She held a lecture tour that included her famous “Ain’t I a Woman?” speech. In it, she challenged prevailing notions of racial and gender inferiority and inequality by reminding listeners of her combined strength and female status. Her life’s mission was to help slaves escape to freedom and build new lives.
